Methamphetamine (MA) is a Schedule ll stimulant that belongs to a class of drugs called psychostimulants.
It is a form of amphetamine that stimulates the central nervous system (CNS), particularly norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine receptors.
MA is a synthetically derived drug that can be easily manufactured through the use of simple lab equipment, household products, and over- the- counter medications.
Crystallized MA is often called meth, rock, ice, john, 64, glass, quartz, crystal, or crank.
METHAMPHETAMINE STATISTICS
1. 90 - 95% of crimes are reportedly drug related in San Luis Obispo County, with well over half attributed specifically to methamphetamine.
2. Of the current, active Child Welfare Services’ cases, County-wide 36% are attributed to methamphetamine abuse. Over 55% of the CWS active cases in Nipomo are attributed to methamphetamine abuse.
3. Of the women pregnant at admission to treatment in San Luis Obispo County, 73% of them reported their primary drug of choice was methamphetamine.
4. In fiscal year 05-06, 48% of women and 34% of men admitted to treatment in San Luis Obispo County reported their drug of choice was methamphetamine.
5. In the Proposition 36 program in San Luis Obispo County, 57% of participants described methamphetamine as their primary drug of choice (compared to 55% in the State).
